Second Grade
The second grade program at Garfield offers a wide variety of fun activities for our students that promotes literacy and enriches Common Core skills. Our activities are planned through teacher collaboration and allow classrooms to intermingle. Some of our highlighted activities are Pumpkin Palooza, Thanksgiving Feast and Readers Theater, Build a Robot Day,  Christmas Extravaganza, Kansas Day, Dr. Seuss Day,  100th Day, Green Buffet, and field trips.  Our classrooms have smart boards, elmo projectors and iPads to share. We offer research based curriculum with an outstanding reading program that extends from a Reading First grant and Every Day Math developed by the University of Chicago. Our students get excited about reading in many ways which includes Scholastic Reading Counts programs. Our second graders as a whole, score above the national average on the MAP (Measures of Academic Progess) a nationally normed test.
